Life on a ranch has a way of growing in seasons. Some years are about deepening what you already do. Other years bring a new chapter that feels both exciting and grounding at the same time. This season, we are grateful to be stepping into something new here at Monterey Mini Cow Company.
We have teamed up with Valais Blacknose of Lovers Lane and welcomed three baby ewes as part of a new Valais Blacknose sheep breeding program.
That is the update in plain terms, and we wanted to share it the same way we would share it standing at the fence line: with appreciation, a sense of responsibility, and a whole lot of excitement for what we get to learn.
Why Valais Blacknose sheep caught our hearts
If you know the breed, you already understand the draw. Valais Blacknose sheep are striking animals. They have a soft woolly look, those unmistakable black markings, and a gentle presence that gets your attention right away.
But what drew us in was not just appearance. Around a real ranch, pretty only goes so far. We were interested in the breed because of the joy they bring, the quality behind a thoughtful breeding program, and the chance to raise them with care from the very beginning.
A partnership we are thankful for
We are especially thankful to be starting this chapter in partnership with Valais Blacknose of Lovers Lane. Fred and Cheryl Hayes have been incredibly generous, and we have been deeply impressed not only by the quality of their sheep, but by the kind of people they are. They care about the animals, they care about the work, and that means a lot to us.
When you meet good people in this world of livestock, you know it. Fred and Cheryl have built something special, and we are grateful for the chance to learn from them. Our hope is to bring a little of that same magic here to Monterey County in a way that stays true to our own ranch, our own values, and the daily work it takes to do things right.
Any time you add a new species or breed focus to ranch life, there is a lot to pay attention to. It takes planning, observation, and a steady routine. We are approaching this the same way we approach the rest of our ranch work: one day at a time, with care for the animals first.
Meet the three baby ewes
Right now, the heart of this new program is simple: three baby ewes.
They are the beginning, not the finish line. That matters to us. We are not interested in turning a ranch update into a big sales speech. We are simply excited to welcome these girls, learn their personalities, and build this program the right way.
There is something special about starting small. You notice everything. How they move through a new pasture. How they settle into routine. How quickly they begin to recognize the people caring for them. Those small, everyday moments are where good ranch programs are really built.
What this means for MMCC
At its core, this new sheep program is an extension of what we already value: thoughtful breeding, hands-on care, and raising animals in a way that feels honest to who we are. We are still the same family-run ranch on the Central Coast. We are just opening the gate to a new part of ranch life.
For us, adding Valais Blacknose sheep does not mean trying to be everything all at once. It means growing carefully. It means staying teachable. And it means giving this program the time it deserves.
Ranch life is always a learning process
One of the best parts of ranching is that it keeps you humble. Animals will do that. Weather will do that. Seasons will do that. Every new step comes with questions to learn through and routines to build.
That is part of why this update feels meaningful to us. Starting a Valais Blacknose sheep breeding program is not just about bringing home beautiful lambs. It is about committing to the long, steady work that follows: feeding, watching, learning, adjusting, and showing up every day.
Looking ahead, one season at a time
We are excited for what is ahead, but we are in no rush to pretend we already know every chapter of the story. For now, we are enjoying these early days, paying attention, and laying a careful foundation.
As the program grows, we will keep sharing honest updates from the ranch. That is the part we enjoy most anyway: letting people follow along with the real work, the quiet progress, and the everyday moments that make ranch life meaningful.
Final thoughts
We are grateful for this new beginning and grateful for the people who care enough to follow along with what we are building here. Teaming up with Valais Blacknose of Lovers Lane and welcoming these three baby ewes feels like a good, grounded start to something special.
From Monterey County to the wider ranch community, thank you for being part of the journey.
