Our sheep programs in Monterey County: Valais Blacknose and Babydoll Southdown
Updated: Oct 10
Our sheep are an important part of Monterey Mini Cow Company. Here at our family-run ranch in Salinas, we are developing our Valais Blacknose and Babydoll Southdown programs with care. Gen and I love sharing the animals, but we also want people to understand the responsibility behind those lovely faces.
Two breeds, each with a place on the ranch
Valais Blacknose sheep are easy to recognize by their black faces and markings against woolly coats. Babydoll Southdowns have their own smaller, stocky look. We keep the two breed programs distinct and discuss the records and plans for each animal individually.
Our Valais Blacknose foundation flock
We have carefully assembled a purebred Valais Blacknose foundation flock in Monterey County. We are retaining our breeding flock and preparing the program over time. A photograph or flock introduction is not a promise that the animal is for sale or that lambs are available.
Our Babydoll Southdown program
Babydoll Southdowns are also part of our sheep story. If you are interested in the breed, ask us about the flock and our current plans. We would rather give you an accurate answer in conversation than leave an old availability claim online.
Questions to ask before bringing sheep home
Start with the space and shelter you can provide, secure fencing, compatible sheep companionship and a plan for regular care. Ask about the individual animal’s age, sex, health history and documentation. Companion placements and breeding-stock inquiries involve different decisions.
Registration papers, pedigree information and an ownership transfer are not the same thing. We will explain what is in hand for the sheep being discussed and what, if anything, remains pending.
Follow the flock or ask about availability
We are glad to talk with people who are taking the time to prepare. Our dedicated Valais site has the current flock and sheep inquiry information. For Babydoll questions, contact the ranch and tell us what you have in mind.
